Today at church I was challenged. Pastor Matt started a new series called Revive. A strong reminder of how at Sandals we have been called to be REAL. I was challenged to be honest with myself, others and God. To put out there the secrets I hold that keep me from living the truth in love. That in order to be set free I need to share. So today I start wearing the bracelet given at church for me to write on. I wrote... Judgemental, Bitterness, and Fear ...the truth will set you free. John 8:32.

Exciting... Today was my first day working in Flip Flops. It has been almost 3 years since I had every Sunday off to go to church. So blessed to have a manager that lets me work every Saturday and have every Sunday off. Not the normal every-other-weekend. Anyways, I spent third service with 11 kids that are 18 months to 2 years. Very busy but fun! The kids are so cute and I loved all the hugs, diapers, and boogers.

This is my friend Lindsay. We met the first day of school. We have included each other in every milestone of our lives. Graduations, my wedding, and now her wedding. She is just the person in my life who I talk to maybe a couple times a year and send a card or two. But we are always there through the important times. Not too many people have a long time friend like that. We have grown apart but still share memories of playing house as kids. She the teacher and I the nurse. Who knew that one day the very thing we played would end up being our life. Anyways this is us...

At her shower they had a theme from the movie "Notting Hill". Very cute. We each had to color a shirt, either one she would like to see or one that was offensive like the "flat mate" in the movie. My mom and I decided to draw one of Jack's old shirts that have disappeared over time... We didn't win, but they got a laugh.

Now she can see. But we both agree that we liked to mop a lot. So don't plan on too many hair cuts.

So mom, Kevin and I picked Sydney up at Ontario Airport late last night. Had to show proof with my id and sign for her.

Disneyland Fun Again...

Mom, Grandma and I went to California Adventure yesterday. Kevin met us there in the afternoon. Grandma is such a trooper. She went on just about everything. Really loved Soarin' Over California.

Then had a really fun dinner at Ariel's Grotto. We were the only table in the whole place that didn't have a little kid. So I filled in. Had my picture taken with Ariel and with other princesses. It was so chessy fun!

The food was really good too...

Grandma really enjoyed the parade.

Memorial Weekend

Yesterday my sister-in-law Annie invited us over for a BBQ. Food was great and almost everyone was able to make it. These are Jack's sisters, Annie and Joanna.

And Annie's husband Sako who worked the BBQ.

Today 3 years ago Jack became a citizen of the USA. So I was silly and decorated the apartment with flags, stars, and red, white, and blue streamers.

I BBQ'd bacon bugers and made tater tots. Something American and Jack's favorite.

So I unfortunately was called off today from work. That is just part of the job. When there are not enough patients someone doesn't get to work. Well, today was my turn. So I was very productive at home instead. Laundry, cleaning, and since my loving husband says it isn't dark enough in our room I made curtains. This is our room before...

I used a shower curtain that I had bought from the bathroom. We found out that if you closed the curtain in the shower it was too dark. So on the window it went. I think it turned out pretty good considering it is a shower curtain on the wall with cup hooks and ribbon.

I know this is a week late... but I still wanted to post the fun from my 28th birthday at Disneyland with my family. Had to start the day with getting a birthday button. Oh. I also received a free pin for the year of a million dreams.

One of the cast members in California Adventure came out to sing happy birthday to me. He was good and really loud.

Had a great dinner at Rainforest Cafe. Even got ice cream with the works...

Wicked!

This is half of the group that went to see Wicked yesterday. Rose, Jane's daughter, myself, and Jane went out to a Greek restaurant for a big lunch before the show. I stuck with familiar and had a burger. Then to the show we went. It was amazing, I loved it!

We walked for hours from the Pantagus Theater to the Kodak Theater. A really long walk full of crazy people and weird shops.

Disneyland

Kevin and I spent Sunday at Disneyland. We had so much fun and the weather great. Except for being really hot afternoon. We waited forever but got to ride a Segway. So much fun. Wish I could get one for myself. Went on a couple rides we hadn't been on for a really long time and beat the hit watching Aladin at California Adventure. Oh... and the Play Parade was beyond fun!

Not something I really want to here my patient say. Not something I have ever heard my patient say. Well at least not until this morning. Things can get so crazy and busy so fast. But, I did it, and my patient felt better in no time. By the end of the day my patient felt better then he had felt in weeks. Now I did my job and safe. Felt like I was failing at the time. Well more like half the day. But once things calmed down a little and looking back I know more then I give myself credit for. This new job is definetly stretching and growing me. There is so much more to come. But for now I am looking forward to a couple days off.

Mini Golf

Not the best picture but my brother Kevin has the camera with our mini golf pictures. I won 66 to 68. A very close match. We got out for the afternoon and played a round of mini golf at Castle Park. It was fun. We walked around the place remembering when we used to go when we were younger.

Then we ate. Food is always important. Kevin had his first chili dog from Portillo's. Good food.

Today I found out from my wonderful manager that yesterday was unbelievable. The unit I work on has like 32 beds. Well yesterday I guess we started with 19 patients and too many nurses. So manager asked for a few more patients. We got them but discharged one for every patient we got. By the end of the day a total of 34 patients that had been on the unit. She said that was like a record. So the crazy day was just not me and my inexperience. But it was nice that my charge nurse and manager kept checking on me today to be sure I was okay since I am so quiet. But I am still excited about a few days off before I work two more days again.

So I worked again today. Came home not feeling good about the day. I was so busy, the day felt like it was just full of tasks that got completed for the most part. I didn't really put pieces together and was more like going through the motions. I almost gave up when I started working as a LVN because of days like these. Days when you end feeling like you didn't do anything to help someone get better and just want to cry. Days that all you did was pass pills. It took almost a year as a new LVN before I really started being able to use my brain and the knowledge I had learned to better care for others. There is no much more to nursing. I have so much to learn and unfortunately it takes time. I just pray that I am safe in all my actions and that my co-workers continue to be so supportive. I really like it at RCH and look forward to the opportunities to come. Lucky I only work 3 days a week and usually only two days in a row. Now to bed I go and tomorrow will be a better day... I pray.

So. It has been a long time. Life has been so good and I have so much to be thankful for. First of all, I am so thankful for all the love and support (even more the roof over our heads and so much more) from my parents. It was hard at times but it really did help me finish school and help us get back on our feet more then I can express. Our new apartment is amazing! I love it so much. Pictures to come, but the camera is at school with Jack tonight. Anyways. Call and join us for dinner... well more like maybe lunch. Jack seems to work more evenings then not. His work is going good at Game Crazy and school is still coming along. As for me I am liking it at RCH so far. Very challenging and new for me. Hard not knowing the system, doctors, and much about people with heart problems. My manager took me off orientation early because everyone told her I was doing good. That is good but it also made me nervous because I don't feel like I know what I am doing. But I lucked out this past weekend because I had two 17 year old boys. I think that is the closest I will get to pediatrics for a little while. Everyone else though was happy to not have someone so young to care for. I guess I do having a calling to care for kids. Oh, and I got my first paycheck. That made school totally worth it. Oh. Another thing. I love the little gym at our new apartment. Plan is to go the four days a week that I don't work and so far I have done it. It feels so good sweating and getting that heart rate up. A healthier me is on the way. More to come so check back...

So surgery was fast yesterday. After three attempts to start my IV. First one the nurse got in but found out it was in the wrong hand. So out it went. Then she tried the other hand with no luck. So in comes another nurse. She gets me in the wrist but numbed it first. I sat uncomfortable and cold on the gurney waiting for the surgeon and anesthesia to stop by. Finally they all did one by one. Last was the anesthesiologist. After asking a few questions he asked me a open my mouth and say ahhh, so I did. Jack, mom, and I had all been cracking jokes while waiting for my bibopsy and mom asked the anesthesiologist not to drop his keys in the mouth since the light used to look in my throat was attached to his keys. Anyways. I then questioned why he needed to look in my mouth if the procedure was gonna be under local anesthesia. He stated that the surgeon always does the procedure under general (that means I would be completely knocked out and have a machine breathing for me). Very quickly I said "HE LIED!" This took the anesthesiologist by surprise. See the PA who did my pre-op on Monday stated that it would only be under local (a sleepy state that I wouldn't remember). I was fine with that. Hearing that I would be knocked out didn't excite me at all. After the pow-wow that happened with the surgical team, I got the good news. They were going to do the procedure under local. My first dose of Versed was given and I don't remember anything else except waking up comfy and warm in recovery. They let me go about 45 minutes later. So since family had come to show their love and support we went out to dinner at El Torito. Pain didn't hit me until I woke up this morning. Not bad. Time to relax and watch some movies!

Tomorrow is the day. Maybe I too will find out that the lump in my right boob is my twin like the aunt in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". You never know. But I will keep you updated. I get the biopsy results next week. The doctors office gave me all kinds of papers full of information. Where I work we don't have any of those resources. So it was kinda neat to see what a real hospital gives their patients to keep them informed.I even was given a bottle of "soap" to wash tomorrow before I go to get cut. A little nervous but only having local anesthesia which is good for me. Give me the Versed!!! For now I am going to enjoy the evening eating since after midnight I can't eat until late tomorrow afternoon after the procedure. Until then....

Mountain Trip

My brother and I went for a drive to see the snow last week. We went all over. Did stop at our Aunt Sandy's property and thought about sledding but there was nothing to stop us from falling into the street. Oh well... It sure was beautiful!

The Dentist Visit

We visited the dentist today. Took Jack to see my old dentist this time. Dr. Smith, how simple does he sound. The highlight was no cavities for both of us. What we learned, besides needing to floss regularly, was that Dr. Smith uses flavored gloves. Saw his stock of grape or bubble gum.

Doesn't Jack look hot with his dentist bib on...

Oh, and Jack looks really tall because the seat is really low. Dr. Smith is a cool short dentist that wont do any extra work that isn't needed. He keeps it real!

I had an interview this afternoon at Riverside Community Hospital. It went so good that I left with a new job. I don't start until next month which is perfect. So excited and couldn't believe it was so easy! I will be working unit South 3, Telemetry. Have a few classes and certifications to get and I get payed to take the classes. Another good thing is someone I have worked with at my previous job just started on the same unit this month. Can't wait to start!

So I got a phone call at 0520 this morning from my friend Catina. She was in the RN program with me and a great support. She called just to let me know that she looked online this morning to find that I had my license. I did it. All done. Officially a RN now. Just need a job and I wont give up.

So I took my state board test yesterday. I think it went good. The test is 75-265 questions and stops when you have proved you are competent or not. I only took 75 questions. So I either did really good or I bombed it. Should hopefully know the results this week.
Other good news is Jack has a few interviews this week. Hopefully he gets a job soon. It has been a real struggle.
I even have an interview this thursday. Hopefully I get the job because all the other positions I have applied for have been a no go.

So my IP "Interim Permit" was posted on the State Board of Nursing website which means I can start orientation as a RN now. I have payed for my test and just waiting to hear from the testing center as to when I can pick the date and time. So excited! Found out that a couple people in the class already have their test dates set. It is almost done. Party plans are going good. Still don't know how many people will be coming but that is ok. I made all the plans knowing I wanted to have a blast no matter who was able to make it with all the holidays and stuff. Anyways. Off to another long day at work.

It is amazing. I have been planning this party for at least 6 months or so. Sent out save the date cards and then invitations. Yet I haven't really heard from anyone. I am starting to think that no one will show. I have a coolest decorations and fun food. Working this whole week to set everything up and cook. I PASSED!!! I officially passed the RN program at RCC. The final was this morning and I PASSED. Did I say that I PASSED!? I am so incredibly excited that I am done. Pinning ceremony is wednesday. Next step is awaiting letter from the State Board of Nursing to sign up to take the "boards". Still waiting to hear from Loma Linda Children's. Had 2 interviews so far and have another scheduled next month. I can't believe I PASSED! Now gonna have to get all the party plans finalized. Get ready to party in the New Year...

Rain & Christmas Lights

I love the rain. The way it sounds hitting everything. Especially the front patio cover and the skylight in our bathroom. I makes me want to curl up with a blanket in front of a fire. Even more exciting is that tomorrow is the 1st of December. Only 17 more days until I am done with nursing school. And 25 days of Christmas music and movies. That always puts a smile on my face. Just can't wait until we get our X-Mas tree, then the whole house will smile like Christmas.

Interviews are rough. Oh my goodness! I have never experienced anything like that before. Had my 2nd interview today. I think it went good. But I won't really know for a week or two because all I got from the 5 other people staring at me from across the table was a bunch of questions for me to answer and no response from any of them. At least 30 minutes of grilling questions. Jack tried to reassure me that it is normal for a panel interview and they must really be considering me to go through all of that. I hope so. Don't know if I want to do it again. But it will be all worth it getting the job.

I got called today for a 2nd interview. No time to really think because it is tomorrow at 2:30. Going to have to leave clinical early to make it and interview in my RCC nursing uniform. Hoping it is a great thing and that it means I get the job. So excited! With school so close to an end this is icing on the cake.... Will let you know how it went afterwards.

The last two days...
Yesterday I had a special tour of Loma Linda Children's Hospital. They have a wonderful Pediatric RN Residency Program. The nurse recruiter gave me and a friend a tour of the units we are interested in. It was so cool! She even was able to introduce us to a couple of the managers. Score! Anyways. I walked on to the hematology/oncology unit at just thought - wow, this is why I went to nursing school. It was just exactly where I had imagined myself working someday. Now, I was only on the unit for a short time but I liked the feel of it. The staff was very welcoming and loved their jobs. The kids were so cute even though they were sick. I just loved it.
Today I had clinical. Spent 8 hours in the ER at Riverside County Regional Medical Center. Not a bad day, just was ok. But... on my way home I was checking my messages and to my surprise the Administrative Secretary for the 4800 unit (peds hem/onco unit) called to set me up for an interview. SO EXCITED! So now I have an interview next week and we will see where I go from there.

Project!

I love projects. Crafts. I have a presentation coming up soon. That I don't like. Speaking in front of people is not my idea of fun. So I try to do all the prep work to get out of some of the talking. The presentation is for the well-elderly community. We have to teach them something. We are focusing on diet (fiber), fluids, and exercise. All are important for all ages. Anyways. I made this poster board as a visual aid describing the all important food pyramid with a focus on fiber.

Hopefully the type is large enough. I will probably have a complaint from my instructor. But at least it is bigger than the normal 8X11 page paper I obtained it from. It was a good use of time since I got sent home from work after only 8 hours. Not good for the paycheck but at least productive.

PJs & School

Now how many people get to go through an associate degree nursing program from home on a comfy couch? Like only those who go to RCC. This morning I am up, basically in my PJs and watching lecture from last Thursday. Didn't watch it earlier because who wants to hear about information that is not on the upcoming test but next the test. So since I had the option to wait to watch the video, I waited. It is the best except when the batteries go out and the instructor doesn't realize that we can't hear them anymore. No worries because when that happens the instructor visits us at clinical and gives us the information missed. This next test is focused on the Endocrine System and the Cardiovascular System. Always interesting and something new...

Test starts in less than 3 hours. Career fair follows. Resume is updated and printed. Praying that I make it to school safely with the wind being so strong all night. That I remain calm during the test and take my time with each question. Would be nice to score a good grade. Pray that my coughing and runny nose can take a break during the test and career fair.

Home Early

I was just at work but one thing in nursing is that if there are no patients then no need for nurses. So I started my shift with 4 patients. All of us only had four. It was nice but too bad I just couldn't stop coughing. Anyways. I was lucky enough to send someone home at 9 am. This then meant that we had not enough patients for the amount of nurses on today. We are supposed to have 5 patients per nurse. We had 16 patients at the beginning of the shift, I sent one home, someone else was getting to go home, and ER had no patients waiting for a bed on our unit.
I then got a call from the house supervisor stating that I could either go home or go up to the 4th floor and let a nurse on that floor go home who had a headache. Well... I just couldn't turn down the option to go home. I feel like butt and 2 of my patients stated that I seemed sicker than them. So after only 5 hours of work I am at home now looking forward to a nap. I really regret telling the doctor on thursday that I didn't need a note for a few days off. Next time I will take the note even if I don't end up using it.

Didn't sleep much again last night but I did get some really good reviewing for my test. Studied with Julie again for a couple hours this morning. Then we were smart. Our nursing class in broken up into traditional students (60 going straight through RN program with no experience), FLEX (which is my group of 10 who are LVNs completing the last half of the RN program online), and MEC (20 students who are LVNs who most have with a contract through the county hospital). Well the instructor who did the majority of the lectures for the next test for my group and the traditional is not the one who made up the lecture notes or test questions. She teaches the MEC instructor content. So today there was a study session that everyone knew about with the MEC instructor. We went. What better way to know what is going to be on the test then have a study session with a teacher who picks the test questions. You would think that more would have shown up. But only a total of 9 people came - Julie, Sue, and I were there. And she gave "example" test questions.

Only 2 more days until test day and one more study group on sunday.

Just so thankful that Jack is so supportive with all the time I have been putting into studying with others in my class this semester. It has been hard on him not having much of my attention. Almost everything out of my mouth lately has been school.

Visited a Doctor

This morning I woke up to Jack calling Kaiser to get an appt. for me today. I probably would not have gone to see a doctor until my throat closed up or I coughed out a lung. But thanks to my husband I was seen by a doctor this morning. Had to miss a study group but it was a good thing. So a throat culture and new prescription for nose/cough medicine later I still don't feel any better. But I know I will soon. Was able to meet with my study group girls at a coffee shop. We get so much done and the time fly's by. Really hoping this test goes a lot better. Just pray that my head wont be full of snot, I wont be coughing distracting everyone else, and I pass the test...

So I woke up this morning feeling even worse. It doesn't help that I had clinical from 3-11 last night. This morning I am up and ready for another long day. Studying at Julie's before we leave at 1:30 for another 3-11 evening of free labor (clinical). Kinda bummed because these are the last few days with a really good clinical instructor. She makes things so relaxed but demands a lot out of us. It has made the experience so much more tolerable. Just hoping that I don't get any of my classmates sick.

Only one week to study. Test is right around the corner. Now I just need to get rid of this soar throat that I woke up with. Really don't have time to be sick. But at least I have some really productive people in my group to study with.

Since Jack and I moved into my parents house in San Jacinto it has been hard being farther away from are church family. We thought we would check out the church's near where we are living. Visited a couple but none of them felt like home. We both made Sandals Church our home before we met. I drove 45 minutes at least twice a week for about 5 years before we got married and couldn't see stopping now. This morning we enjoyed the feeling of being at home. The place we met. Sandals Church.

Just taking a break from studying for my next test. Can't wait until I don't have anymore tests. Only 10 weeks to go and I'm done! Old site is no longer and this one is free for now it will do. So keep checking back...
